Short answer: Google Photos is a consumer photo library — automatic backup, face and object search, easy sharing of memories. A DAM is a professional, team asset system with controlled metadata, rights, versioning and brand governance. Google Photos is superb for your photos; it is not built to run a team’s brand and creative library. It is a close cousin of DAM vs Google Drive, but tuned for pictures.

What Google Photos does — and doesn't — for a team
Google Photos has genuinely impressive search: it recognises people and pets (once you have labelled face groups), places and “things” through AI object recognition, reads text inside images, and understands natural-language queries like “colourful sunsets in Mexico.” For finding your memories it is superb. The catch for a team is what that search rests on. It indexes AI-derived subjects, captions you add inside Photos, filenames and camera model — but there is no documented way to search the IPTC keywords, caption, creator or copyright embedded in the file itself, and no controlled vocabulary or rights fields at all. A professional library's carefully embedded metadata has nowhere to live. There is also a hard, easily missed technical wall. As of 31 March 2025 Google removed the broad Photos Library API scopes: third-party apps can now only see photos a user manually picks (via the Picker API) or that the app itself created. In plain terms, a DAM can no longer index, sync or manage your existing Google Photos library through the API. Whatever you have accumulated there is, from an asset-management point of view, walled in.
The rest follows from its consumer design. Editing is non-destructive — you can revert to the original — but there is no numbered version history, no per-asset licence or usage-rights field, and the storage allowance is shared across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail. Backed-up originals can even be recompressed if you choose the storage-saver quality. It is a memories app, not a system of record.
When the team library is really someone's phone backup
A small studio starts keeping client work in a shared Google Photos library because the search “just works.” A year in, they want to put a proper DAM in front of it to add rights tracking and cross-format search — and discover the March 2025 API change means the DAM can't read the existing library at all; everything would have to be exported and re-imported by hand. Meanwhile the embedded keywords their photographer added never surfaced in Photos' search, and there is no way to mark which frames are cleared for commercial use. The recall was lovely; the management layer was never there.
This is an illustrative composite, but the API lockout and the missing rights and embedded-metadata layers are documented, not hypothetical.
Google Photos for personal, a DAM for the team
The honest split is clean: Google Photos is a personal or family memories app, and a DAM is a team's asset system. Because the API no longer lets a DAM read your existing Photos library, the practical move for a professional team is to keep the master library in a DAM from the start — where embedded metadata is searchable, rights and expiry are tracked, versions are kept, and originals are never recompressed. Use Google Photos for what it is brilliant at, personally, and don't ask it to be the studio's system of record.

Google Photos is enough for personal and family libraries, or a very small team that just needs to find snapshots by who and what is in them.
